Your Future Self is Watching: Every Choice You Make Today is Building (or Destroying) Who You Become
The Lies You Tell Yourself That Are Sabotaging Your Future Success
I have always believed that life is a gift. A temporary ride that we should embrace with open arms, full of experiences, adventures, and learning. But here’s the problem: most people are sleepwalking through it.
They wake up, do the same things, follow the same routines, chase money, chase status, chase validation - without stopping to ask one important question:
“Is my future self going to be proud of the choices I’m making today?”
I have had moments in life where I felt I was on autopilot. Everything was comfortable. Business was running, money was coming in, but something was missing. I would find myself sitting there, wondering if I was truly growing or just repeating the same life in a loop. That’s when I would shake things up - move to a new country, start a new business, learn a new skill, push my boundaries. Anything to break the cycle.
Most people don’t do that. They stay stuck, living the same year over and over again until, one day, they look back with regret.
Here’s the truth: your future self is watching. Every choice you make today shapes the person you become. Every habit you reinforce, every risk you take (or avoid), every opportunity you grab (or ignore) is defining your future reality.
If you could meet yourself 5 or 10 years from now, would they shake your hand and thank you? Or would they be disappointed?
This isn’t just about money, career, or external success. It’s about health, purpose, happiness, and the kind of life you want to live. Most people chase material things thinking it will bring fulfillment, but I have been there - I had it all, and I still felt empty. What really matters is who you become, not what you accumulate.
So let’s talk about how to stop disappointing your future self. How to live intentionally instead of drifting. How to take control and create a life that your future self will be proud of.
Because in the end, the happiest people aren’t the ones who had the most money or fame - they are the ones who truly lived.
1. The Autopilot Trap: Why Most People Never Change
Most people don’t realize they’re stuck in autopilot until it’s too late. They wake up, follow the same routine, go to work, scroll their phones, watch Netflix, go to bed - then repeat. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and before they know it, years have passed, and they’re the same person they were a decade ago.
It’s a slow, silent kind of decay - the kind that doesn’t hit you until one day, you look in the mirror and wonder, What happened?
I have had moments where I caught myself living on repeat. Everything was going well - business was thriving, life was comfortable, but something inside me felt off. It was as if I was just coasting, repeating the same cycle without any real growth. And I hate that feeling. That’s why I constantly shake things up. Whether it’s moving to a new country, launching a new venture, picking up a new sport, or even learning an entirely new industry, I refuse to stay stagnant.
But most people don’t do that. They get comfortable. They tell themselves they will make a change “next year.” They think they have all the time in the world.
The truth? Time doesn’t wait.
Think about it - how many times have you told yourself you will:
Get in shape next year
Start that business when the time is right
Learn a new skill when life slows down
Travel when you have more money
And yet, years pass, and you’re still saying the same things. The problem isn’t time - it’s that most people are waiting for the perfect moment that will never come.
Why Do People Get Stuck?
Comfort is Addictive
The brain loves routine. It loves familiarity. That’s why breaking out of your comfort zone feels uncomfortable - it’s designed to keep you “safe.” But safe doesn’t always mean happy. Safe doesn’t always mean fulfilled.Fear of Failure
People avoid taking risks because they don’t want to fail. But what they don’t realize is that not taking action is the biggest failure of all. Every opportunity you ignore, every experience you skip, every chance you pass up - you’re failing yourself without even realizing it.Lack of Urgency
We all think we have time. That’s the biggest lie we tell ourselves. But tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Next year isn’t promised. Life can change in an instant, and if you’re not living fully today, you might never get the chance.
I refuse to let that happen. I refuse to look back and regret the things I didn’t do. That’s why I live with urgency. If I want to do something, I do it. If I want to learn something, I start now. Because I know that my future self is watching - and I don’t want to disappoint him.
Most people never change because they don’t feel the pain of staying the same. They don’t see what they’re losing by doing nothing. But the cost of inaction is always greater than the cost of taking a chance.
If you don’t want to wake up 10 years from now as the same person you are today, you need to start moving. Now.
2. The Lies We Tell Ourselves (and How They Keep Us Stuck)
The most dangerous lies are not the ones people tell us. They are the ones we tell ourselves. These are the stories we repeat in our heads that justify our inaction, delay our progress, and make us feel comfortable with mediocrity.
I have seen it firsthand in business, health, and life. People with incredible potential get stuck because they buy into their own excuses. I have done it too. The difference is, I don’t let those lies dictate my future.
Let’s break down some of the biggest lies we tell ourselves - and how they silently destroy our future.
Lie #1: "I’ll Start Tomorrow"
Tomorrow is the biggest scam ever invented.
Think about it - how many times have you told yourself you would start something “tomorrow”? How many times have you delayed a goal, a habit, or a change because “now isn’t the right time”?
Guess what? Tomorrow never comes.
Life keeps moving, distractions pile up, and suddenly, you’re five years older, still making the same excuses.
The most successful people in the world didn’t wait for “the right time.” They just started. They didn’t wait to feel ready, they didn’t wait for motivation, they didn’t wait for the stars to align. They took action despite the discomfort.
Want to get in shape? Start today with a walk.
Want to learn a skill? Read one page of a book.
Want to change your life? Do something right now that your future self will thank you for.
Lie #2: "I Don’t Have Time"
This is my least favorite excuse.
Everyone has the same 24 hours. The difference is how we use them.
People say they don’t have time, but they somehow manage to binge-watch an entire Netflix series, scroll social media for hours, or spend weekends doing nothing productive. It’s not about not having time - it’s about not prioritizing your future self.
If something is important, you make time for it. Period.
I have built businesses, traveled the world, enjoyed multiple sports, and invested in my health. Not because I had extra time, but because I made time. I managed time.
You don’t find time. You create it.
Lie #3: "It’s Too Late for Me"
This is the lie that kills more dreams than failure ever will.
I’ve seen people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond say it’s too late to change, too late to start something new, too late to reinvent themselves. That’s a lie.
Colonel Sanders started KFC at 65.
Stan Lee created Marvel’s biggest superheroes in his 40s.
Ray Kroc turned McDonald's into a global empire at 52.
It’s not too late. It’s only too late if you never start.
If you’re reading this, you still have time.
Your future self is still watching, waiting for you to make a move.
Lie #4: "Success is About Luck"
Luck plays a role, but it’s not the defining factor of success.
The people who get lucky the most are the ones who put themselves in a position to win. They work hard, take risks, make sacrifices, and keep showing up - even when things don’t go their way.
I’ve built businesses from scratch. I have won and lost, failed and succeeded. But every time I lost, I learned. And that’s why I won more than I lost.
You don’t need luck. You need consistency. You need to show up every single day.
The Real Question: What Story Are You Telling Yourself?
Every day, you’re either telling yourself a story that moves you forward or one that holds you back.
Your future self is either cheering you on - or disappointed that you’re wasting time.
If you’re stuck, change the narrative. Instead of:
“I don’t have time” → “I will make time.”
“I’ll start tomorrow” → “I’ll take one small action today.”
“I’m not lucky” → “I will create my own opportunities.”
“It’s too late” → “My best years are ahead of me.”
Your future self is watching. Make sure they’re proud of the person you’re becoming.
3. How to Stop Letting Your Past Dictate Your Future
Most people are prisoners of their past. They let old failures, past mistakes, and missed opportunities define who they are today. They replay old regrets in their minds, convincing themselves that they can’t change, can’t improve, can’t do better.
But here’s the truth: Your past is a lesson, not a life sentence.
Your future self doesn’t care about the excuses you have built around your past. It only cares about what you do now.
The Weight of Regret
Regret is a powerful emotion. It can either paralyze you or push you forward.
I have had moments in life where I wished I had done things differently - invested in certain opportunities earlier, avoided bad business decisions, or prioritized my health sooner. But dwelling on the past never changed anything. Only action does.
The problem is, many people cling to their mistakes instead of learning from them. They wear their failures like a badge, reinforcing the idea that they are stuck, doomed to repeat the same patterns.
But that’s just another lie we tell ourselves.
Your Past Does Not Define You - Unless You Let It
Think of your life as a book. If you’re on Chapter 10, why would you keep re-reading Chapter 5?
Every day, you have the power to write a new page. Your past is only a reference point - it is not a forecast of your future.
Some of the most successful people in history failed massively before they got it right:
Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper for "lacking imagination."
Oprah Winfrey was told she wasn’t fit for television.
Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before inventing the lightbulb.
If they had let their past failures define them, the world would be a much darker place - literally.
Rewriting Your Identity
If you want to change your life, you must change your identity.
That means shifting your mindset from:
❌ “I always fail.” → ✅ “I am capable of learning from failure.”
❌ “I’m not disciplined.” → ✅ “I am becoming more disciplined every day.”
❌ “I was never good at this.” → ✅ “I am getting better with practice.”
This simple shift in identity is everything. When you see yourself as someone who takes action, who improves, who learns - your behavior starts to follow.
Forgive Your Past Self, Invest in Your Future Self
The best thing you can do for your future self is to forgive your past self.
Forgive yourself for the times you wasted.
Forgive yourself for not knowing what you know now.
Forgive yourself for the opportunities you missed.
Then, make a commitment to your future self:
Take one action today that they will thank you for.
Stop repeating the same cycles that held you back.
Prove to yourself that change is possible - because it is.
Your past is done. Your future is still unwritten.
Your future self is watching. Make them proud.
4. Building Daily Habits That Align With Your Future Self
Your future self is not created in one dramatic moment of change. It’s built brick by brick, day by day, habit by habit.
The problem is, most people wait until they feel like it to take action. But your future self doesn’t care about your feelings today - it only cares about what you consistently do.
Every small habit you repeat is either building the future version of you that you want - or it’s keeping you stuck.
The Compound Effect of Tiny Choices
The biggest mistake people make is overestimating the impact of big decisions and underestimating the power of small, daily choices.
It’s not one gym session that gets you in shape - it’s the 100 workouts you show up for.
It’s not one book that makes you wise - it’s the habit of reading every day.
It’s not one day of eating healthy that makes a difference - it’s the months and years of consistently fueling your body well.
Every action is a vote for the person you’re becoming.
The Identity Shift: Be the Kind of Person Who…
Most people set goals backward. They say, “I want to lose weight.” But what they should be saying is:
👉 “I want to be the kind of person who takes care of their health.”
Instead of saying “I want to be rich,” say:
👉 “I want to be the kind of person who makes smart financial decisions daily.”
Instead of saying “I want to be more disciplined,” say:
👉 “I want to be the kind of person who does the hard things, even when I don’t feel like it.”
The key is not just what you do - it’s who you become.
The Two Paths: Who Are You Becoming?
Right now, you are on one of two paths:
1️⃣ The path of excuses:
Skipping workouts because you are tired.
Scrolling mindlessly instead of working on your goals.
Telling yourself “I’ll start tomorrow.”
2️⃣ The path of commitment:
Taking action even when you don’t feel like it.
Making choices that align with the future you want.
Proving to yourself that you are disciplined, focused, and capable.
Which path are you choosing today?
The 1% Rule: Get Just a Little Better Every Day
The best way to change your life is NOT through massive, overnight transformations. It’s by improving just 1% every day.
If you read 10 pages a day, that’s 18 books a year.
If you do 10 push-ups daily, that’s 3,650 push-ups in a year.
If you save $5 a day, that’s $1,825 by the end of the year.
Small habits, when repeated daily, lead to massive results over time.
How to Build Habits That Actually Stick
1️⃣ Make it easy. Start with something so small you can’t fail. Want to work out? Do just one push-up. Want to read more? Read one page a day.
2️⃣ Attach it to something you already do. Want to meditate daily? Do it right after brushing your teeth. Want to stretch more? Do it while watching TV.
3️⃣ Track your progress. Seeing streaks and progress builds motivation. Keep a simple checklist, journal, or app to measure how consistent you are.
4️⃣ Create a "never miss twice" rule. Missed a day? No problem. But never miss two days in a row.
5️⃣ Visualize your future self. Every time you’re tempted to skip a habit, ask: “What would my future self want me to do?”
The more you act in alignment with your future self, the more you become them.
A Challenge for You
Tonight, before you sleep, write down:
✔ One habit your future self would want you to start.
✔ One habit your future self would want you to quit.
✔ One action you will take tomorrow to step closer to the person you want to become.
The future is watching. Are you building a life you’ll be proud of?
5. Becoming Your Future Self Today: Align with Who You Want to Be
Most people think about the future like it’s some far-off place they’ll magically arrive at one day. But here’s the truth - you are shaping your future self right now, in real-time, with every choice you make.
The way you eat, the way you spend your money, the thoughts you allow to dominate your mind, the people you surround yourself with - all of these things are turning you into someone. The question is: Are you becoming the person you want to be, or are you drifting into someone you’ll regret?
Reverse-Engineering Your Future
A simple but powerful exercise: Imagine yourself 10 years from now.
Who is that person? What do they look like? How do they feel? How do they move through the world?
Are they strong, confident, and financially independent? Or are they tired, bitter, and full of regret?
Now, ask yourself:
What daily habits would this future version of you have? What decisions did they make that got them there?
The problem is, most people don’t think this way. They let life happen to them instead of designing it. But if you reverse-engineer your future self, you can start making choices today that align with the person you want to become.
The "One-Year Test" - Will You Be Proud in 12 Months?
Forget 10 years. Let’s make this real. Ask yourself:
"If I keep doing what I’m doing today, will I be proud of myself in a year?"
If you keep eating the way you do, will your body look and feel better - or worse?
If you keep spending money the way you do, will you be wealthier - or more in debt?
If you keep treating your relationships the way you do, will they be stronger - or falling apart?
If you keep avoiding the hard conversations, will you be more at peace - or drowning in unresolved issues?
If the answer is "no" - if your future self is going to be disappointed - then something has to change, starting today.
The Power of Identity: Stop Trying, Start Becoming
Most people fail at change because they focus on actions, not identity. They say:
"I want to work out."
"I want to make more money."
"I want to be more confident."
But the secret to transformation is to become the kind of person who naturally does these things. Instead of saying:
"I need to go to the gym," say "I am the type of person who takes care of my body."
"I should save more money," say "I am a disciplined person with money."
"I want to read more," say "I am someone who never stops learning."
When you shift your identity, the actions follow automatically.
Write Your Future Self Manifesto
A simple but powerful exercise: Write a Future Self Manifesto.
Write down a list of statements about the person you are becoming:
I am the kind of person who takes care of my health.
I make decisions that my future self will thank me for.
I surround myself with people who elevate me.
I don’t waste time on distractions that don’t serve my future.
I create, I build, I contribute - I don’t just consume.
Read this every morning. Live by it. Act like your future self, and eventually, you will become them.
Storytelling: A Real-Life Transformation
There are countless examples of people who made a radical change simply by committing to a new version of themselves. One that comes to mind is J.K. Rowling.
Before she became the billionaire author of Harry Potter, she was broke, depressed, and raising a child alone. She had every reason to give up. But she saw a different future for herself. She identified as a writer before anyone else did. She wrote every day, no matter what.
She wasn’t just trying to be a writer. She was a writer. And that changed everything.
You don’t need to be J.K. Rowling, but you do need to ask yourself:
"Am I showing up every day as the future self I want to be?"
Because every day, that person is watching.
6. The Final Wake-Up Call: What If Your Future Self Could Speak to You?
Imagine your future self could send you a letter. Not a vague, feel-good message, but a brutally honest reality check about what happens if you don’t change.
Maybe it would say:
"I wish you had taken your health seriously. Now, we are dealing with chronic pain, low energy, and regret. You always said you would start ‘next week,’ but next week never came. Now, it’s too late."
Or maybe:
"I wish you had been more disciplined with money. Now, you are stuck in financial stress, living paycheck to paycheck, because you didn’t make smarter choices when you had the time. You bought things you didn’t need instead of building a future you would be proud of."
Or:
"I wish you had taken risks when you had the chance. You let fear hold you back, and now you’re stuck wondering ‘what if?’"
The biggest regrets of dying people aren’t about what they did - they are about what they didn’t do.
A study on regret found that people on their deathbeds don’t regret their failures. They regret their inaction. The dreams they never chased. The words they never said. The opportunities they let slip away.
We assume we have time. But time is the one thing you don’t get back.
No One Is Coming to Save You
Here’s a hard truth: Your future self depends on you right now. No one else.
Not your parents. Not your boss. Not the government. Not some magical version of you that suddenly wakes up one day “motivated.”
If you don’t take control of your health, your finances, your relationships, your mindset- no one else will.
Most people wait for some external event to force them to change - a health scare, a job loss, a personal crisis. But why wait for rock bottom when you can make the change now, while you still have time?
One Change, Today
Right now, at this very moment, your future self is watching.
You don’t need to change everything overnight. Just one thing.
Make one better food choice today.
Save one dollar instead of wasting it.
Have one tough conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Read one page of a book instead of scrolling through social media.
Because the truth is, you are never stuck. You are always one choice away from a different future.
So, what’s it going to be?
Will your future self look back and say “Thank you” - or “Why didn’t you try?”
Final Thoughts
Life is short. You don’t have time to waste on autopilot. You don’t have time to keep disappointing the person you are meant to become.
The best version of you is waiting. It’s time to show up for them.
